Interview with Munteanu Cosmina Valentina: as a child, she dreamed of working for Discovery.

"In the interview with Munteanu Cosmina Valentina, the female power and determination shine through in her role as Second Officer on the Seabourn Cruise Line. An engaging story featured in our new column "Women Power".

1. What was the main motivation behind your choice to pursue a career in cruise ships?

At first, the main motivation was to travel, I knew that crew ships have amazing itineraries, but as soon as I did my first contract, it also opened the door to a fascinating world full of challenges, highs and lows. Entering the cruise ship industry was like stepping into a different realm altogether. I immediately loved the dynamics of the work and development, both professionally and personally.

2. Can you share a significant moment or experience that made you realize this was the right job for you?

The job itself is a pool of opportunities. When I had that first sense of growth, I knew I wanted to cultivate that feeling further. It simply aligned me with my aspirations; one of these moments was when I did my first manoeuver.

3. Being a cruise ship officer is often associated with a male-dominated environment. How have you faced and overcome gender-related challenges in your career?

Growing up, I was part of groups that included both males and females, so gender dynamics have never been an issue for me. This early experience of collaboration and inclusivity has shaped my approach to teamwork.

On the other hand, the idea itself of working with a different team initially presented a challenge but I soon discovered that it added a unique flavor to my professional journey.

4. What is the specific role you play on board the ship and what are the challenges and satisfactions it brings?

I am currently a Second Officer and my duties include but are not limited to navigation, watch keeping, safety procedures, communication, equipment and safety maintenance, training and emergency duties.

The specific duties can vary, and as a Second Officer, I work closely with other officers and crew members to ensure the overall safety and efficiency of the ship’s operations.

Challenges: work-life balance (extended periods away from home), navigational (unpredictable situations, emergencies, technical malfunctions-they require a high level of vigilance and readiness), fast paced life at times.

Satisfactions: professional growth and development as well as personal, taking on significant responsibilities in terms of navigation and safety (providing a sense of accomplishment), interacting and working with people from various backgrounds (provides a rich cultural experience, fostering open-mindedness and cultural awareness), developing great friendships, financial benefits.

5. When you were a child, did you have a secret dream?

Yes, in fact, I had three (ahahah):

· To write a book;

· To become a business woman;

· To work for Discovery (ahahah) - as a child, I was so fascinated and captivated by the idea of exploring the world. So inspiring!

6. Cruise ships are often considered microcosms of cultural diversity. How do you manage communication and interpersonal relationships with such a diverse crew?

This is one of my favorite aspects of my job! I find joy in learning different customs, languages and perspectives and I always encourage open communication, where everyone can feel comfortable expressing their thoughts.

During high school years, I have worked in several countries and I even took part in Erasmus whilst in university. There is nothing more enjoyable than to be able to share and to receive information from different cultural backgrounds!

Within the context of managing diverse cultures, feedback serves as a highly effective instrument for promoting understanding, fostering collaboration, and facilitating continuous improvement in our professional environment.

7. How do you manage work-life balance when you spend long periods away from home?

Maintaining a healthy work-life is challenging and I am still learning how to improve it. I try to prioritize self-care through activities that can recharge me mentally and physically. This includes staying connected with my loved ones through regular communication, visiting places during my time off, planning my time at home. Establishing boundaries between work and personal life is essential for overall well-being.

8. What is the most rewarding aspect of your profession and what motivates you to continue working on cruise ships?

There are several aspects that motivate me to continue, such as:

· Continuous self-development;

· Dynamics of the job ( every situation is different and unique, you cannot get bored of it);

· The work environments (especially within the company I work for-I had the privilege of working with extraordinary individuals);

· The financial aspects;

· Last but not least, one of the perks of my job is that, while I am on leave, I enjoy the freedom to pursue any activities I desire with my time.

This flexibility allows me to engage in personal interest and properly recharge for the next stint at sea. It is a balance that I have found fulfilling!

9. Finally, what advice would you give to those considering a career as a cruise ship officer, especially women who may feel uncertain about this career path?

For anyone being determined to follow this path, my advice is to embrace the opportunity wholeheartedly. The cruise industry offers a dynamic and enriching environment where you can develop and break self-imposed barriers. Do not let any preconceptions hold you back (especially, gender should never be a barrier on a cruise ship nowadays). The industry is evolving, and diversity is increasingly valued. Be confident in your abilities, seek mentorship, and take advantage of the unique experiences the role brings. You will find a supportive community and a world of possibilities waiting for you.

Something that has always helped me is: “if you can dream it, you can become it!”
