Interview with Dana Teodorescu: When a fortuitous layover makes you fall in love with your job

In the eighth episode of our Women Power series, we interviewed Dana Teodorescu, Deck Officer for Carnival Cruise Line, when an unplanned stop makes you fall in love with your job.

1. What was the main motivation behind your choice to pursue a career in cruise ships?

Embarking on my maritime career in 2013 aboard container ships was a fortuitous beginning, marked by an enduring fascination with the profession. However, it was a twist of fate during a layover in Papeete, French Polynesia, necessitated by adverse weather conditions, that opened my eyes to an alternative realm within the maritime domain—the cruise ship industry.

Those two days spent ashore, exploring the vibrant surroundings and pristine beaches, sparked a profound realization that a world of new possibilities awaited. Delving into meticulous research, I discerned that transitioning to the cruise ship sector promised a superior professional experience on multiple fronts.

In 2019, I made the discerning choice to join Carnival Cruise Line. From the outset, the on-board lifestyle captivated me, weaving a tapestry of cultural richness, shared values, and a remarkable embrace of diversity. Within the initial fortnight, the palpable sense of unity and familial camaraderie fostered an undeniable connection, compelling me to forge a lasting allegiance.

Since then, my tenure with Carnival Cruise Line has been a saga of fulfillment. The tapestry of maritime existence, with its unique challenges and rewards, unfolds in a manner that continually enriches my professional odyssey.

2. Can you share a significant moment or experience that made you realize this was the right job for you?

In the tapestry of my professional narrative, every passing day unveils a symphony of moments that crystallize the profound alignment between myself and this vocation. The intricacies woven into the fabric of my responsibilities negate the prospect of monotony, rendering routine an elusive concept. The inherent complexity of this role serves as a crucible for perpetual intellectual engagement, and I find immense satisfaction in navigating its multifaceted challenges.

This career not only fulfills my professional aspirations but also catalyzes a journey of personal growth. The hurdles encountered on a daily basis are not mere obstacles but rather stepping stones that illuminate the path of progress. Observing the tangible strides in both my professional acumen and personal development is a source of boundless joy and pride. Each backward glance at the distance traversed serves as a testament to the resonance between my essence and the demands of this occupation, affirming with certainty that this is not merely a job; it is an enriching odyssey of continual advancement.

3. Being a cruise ship officer is often associated with a male-dominated environment. How have you faced and overcome gender-related challenges in your career?

Navigating the realm of a cruise ship officer, traditionally perceived as a male-dominated sphere, has been a nuanced journey. My formative years unfolded in the embrace of a predominantly male environment, presenting an initial challenge that prompted introspection. Initially, I grappled with a personal interpretation of these challenges, seeking understanding within myself.

The turning point materialized when I recognized the power of effective communication. Armed with this insight, I discerned that a significant portion of the challenges I faced dissipated – a remarkable 80%, to be precise. A pivotal revelation unfolded as I acknowledged that not all encounters need to be internalized or personalized. Life at sea, rife with its unique hardships, sometimes manifests in the form of homesickness or distant familial concerns beyond our control. In these moments, I realized the importance of extending empathy, recognizing that stress can evoke varied coping mechanisms in individuals.

Conclusively, the linchpin of my success in overcoming gender-related challenges has undeniably been rooted in the art of effective communication. This, coupled with a heightened sense of empathy, has not only dismantled barriers but also fostered a more inclusive and understanding environment onboard.

4. What is the specific role you play on board the ship and what are the challenges and satisfactions it brings?

In my capacity as a 2nd Officer on board the ship, my responsibilities encompass a diverse range of tasks that vary each day. Over an 8-hour shift, I assume a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and stability of the ship. This includes overseeing voyage planning, conducting maintenance and periodic tests on navigational equipment, managing communication protocols, and handling other duties integral to the ship's operation.

The complexity of the job ensures a continuous learning curve, with a constant need to acquire new knowledge, refresh existing skills, and stay prepared for various scenarios. Despite the challenges, the allure of the role lies in the dynamic maritime environment and the sense of unity fostered within the team. Working in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere serves as a powerful motivator, propelling me to invest my utmost effort. In such an environment, personal and professional growth becomes an inevitable outcome of the collective commitment of the team.

5. When you were a child, did you have a secret dream?

As a child, I harbored a secret dream of making a groundbreaking discovery—connecting dots that had eluded others thus far. My sincere hope was that this revelation would have a profound and positive impact, ultimately benefiting a significant number of people.

6. Cruise ships are often considered microcosms of cultural diversity. How do you manage communication and interpersonal relationships with such a diverse crew?

Navigating the cultural diversity on cruise ships involves effective communication and fostering positive interpersonal relationships. Despite our differences, the crew successfully communicates and relates to each other due to a shared set of core values. Our approach involves consciously eliminating biases, stereotypes, and assumptions while embracing diversity.

I personally uphold a non-judgmental stance, firmly believing that respecting differences is the key to cultivating a culture of trust, openness, and mutual respect. In my leadership role, adapting to diverse styles and preferences is crucial. Flexibility is paramount, requiring me to adjust to various audiences, situations, or tasks.

We actively recognize and accentuate the positive impact of diversity and inclusion within the crew. By celebrating these differences, we create a sense of belonging, engagement, and pride, fostering a harmonious work environment.

7. How do you manage work-life balance when you spend long periods away from home?

Balancing work and personal life during extended periods away from home poses a perpetual challenge, particularly given the unpredictable nature of onboard emergencies or malfunctions. To navigate this, I adhere to a golden rule—prioritizing my needs and optimizing my 'to-do list' for maximum efficiency. Achieving work-life equilibrium is an ongoing journey that demands continuous effort and adaptation.

Regularly reassessing my priorities, making necessary adjustments, and maintaining a commitment to personal relationships are integral aspects of this balancing act. I firmly believe that finding the right equilibrium leads to satisfaction, happiness, and overall success. To unwind and detach from work responsibilities, I engage in various activities such as going out, hitting the gym, attending social crew events, making friends, watching movies, and reading.

Onboard, it's crucial to embrace opportunities for leisure, as having fun not only enhances personal well-being but also positively influences performance and productivity. This ethos is encapsulated in our motto: "Have fun. Be safe." Striking this balance is not just a personal priority; it contributes to a positive impact on both employees and employers, creating a holistic and fulfilling work environment.

8. What is the most rewarding aspect of your profession and what motivates you to continue working on cruise ships?

I find immense fulfillment in my profession, and its rewards span various dimensions. The opportunity to explore places I never imagined visiting is a source of gratitude. Upon returning home, I not only cherish the memories but also enjoy the luxury of time and financial comfort to pursue my hobbies. The training provided by the company, particularly at the esteemed CSmart Training Center in Almere, stands out as invaluable. The chance to undergo continuous professional development and growth is a unique aspect that sets this profession apart and remains a compelling motivation for my continued commitment. The prospect of ongoing learning and advancement is unparalleled, making each day a new opportunity for personal and career enrichment.

9. Finally, what advice would you give to those considering a career as a cruise ship officer, especially women who may feel uncertain about this career path?

For those contemplating a career as a cruise ship officer, especially women navigating potential uncertainties, my advice is to approach your chosen path with unwavering consistency and wholehearted commitment. Define your life aspirations, visualize your future, and if the envisioned journey resonates with your passions, pursue it wholeheartedly.

Working aboard a cruise ship can be intense, involving sacrifices such as missing significant events back home, absence of traditional weekends or days off, confined living spaces, demanding guests, and limited privacy. However, the trade-offs include financial comfort, extended vacations compared to land-based jobs, cost-free travel experiences, the opportunity to forge global friendships, and the ability to share and exchange diverse experiences with people from around the world.

Ultimately, my advice is to align your career with your passions. Life is fleeting, and while you can always earn more money, time is irreplaceable. Choose a path that brings you joy and fulfillment, allowing you to make the most of your precious time on this journey.
