In the tenth episode of our column Women Power, we interviewed Andreea Iulia Nichifor, Second Officer for Celebrity Cruises. If you work really hard, and you're kind, amazing things will happen.
1. What was the main motivation behind your choice to pursue a career in cruise ships?
To be honest, my main reason was my father, because of him and his stories about working on ships made me to wish to build a career at sea, especially that you are working and traveling around the world, combining the business with pleasure and the best environment to do this is on the cruise ship. The second reason to work on a cruise ship is a combination of my love for the sea, a thirst for adventure, a desire to escape the ordinary, and the opportunity to connect with people on a global.
When I join first time the cruise industry was in 2017 as Youth Counselor seasonal in the entertainment department for almost 2 years because back in that time, women cadets or women officers were not something very common as today in 2024.
I will always remember the day I changed the position as an Apprentice Officer, it was March 8th the Women’s day, the best day of my life. As my father was always telling me "If you work really hard, and you're kind, amazing things will happen."
2. Can you share a significant moment or experience that made you realize this was the right job for you?
I remember the first time, in 2020, when the Captain, under his supervision, allowed me to maneuver the azipods during the departure from anchorage. In those moments, I realized that this is what I want to keep doing in the future and that I belong to cruise ships.
3. Being a cruise ship officer is often associated with a male-dominated environment. How have you faced and overcome gender-related challenges in your career?
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to encounter more men who appreciated my work rather than hindered it, making things easier. Occasionally, you may encounter someone more hostile, but with dedication and professionalism, even the most skeptical can reconsider and appreciate us. We may not have the physical strength of men, but qualities like organization, precision, and dedication are feminine traits that fit well into this world.
4. What is the specific role you play on board the ship and what are the challenges and satisfactions it brings?
I am currently a 2nd Officer and my main duties are related to watchkeeping, safe of navigation, communication, record-keeping, safety of the ship, security procedures, equipment maintenance, training and emergency tasks. I work closely with the other officers as a team to ensure the overall safety and efficiency of the ship's operations are done properly and accordingly to the company policies. I also used to be responsible for passage planning, loading, ship stability, making sure that all the safety measurements are in order such as the fire fighting equipment and the lifeboats. I enjoy all the tasks that are assigned to me.
5. When you were a child, did you have a secret dream?
When I was a child, I was dreaming to become an independent woman and to travel around the world.
6. Cruise ships are often considered microcosms of cultural diversity. How do you manage communication and interpersonal relationships with such a diverse crew?
In the maritime industry, effective communication skills are vital for smooth operations and the safety of the crew and vessels. Overcoming cultural misunderstandings requires patience, understanding, and proactive measures to bridge the gaps caused by diverse backgrounds. By implementing strategies such as cultural awareness training, language support, clear communication protocols, the maritime industry can enhance communication skills and create a more harmonious work environment for crew members from different cultures. In my opinion, the most important thing is to always have an open communication, to ask many questions, and to work as a team because you will always have the best results.
7. How do you manage work-life balance when you spend long periods away from home?
Maintaining work-life balance during extended periods on the ship, which essentially becomes a second home is difficult. I always stay connected with my family and friends through video calls and messaging. During vacation I switch off from work "mode"- it's helps me create a clear boundary between professional responsibilities and personal time. Balance is different for each one of us and it’s important to identify what is the best for you.
8. What is the most rewarding aspect of your profession and what motivates you to continue working on cruise ships?
The continuous personal and professional growth makes this profession unique in the world. Each day is never the same as the previous one, and the opportunity to discover places, meet people, and experience cultures from around the world remains the most fascinating part. The most rewarding moment is when you are promoted to a higher rank, when hard work and sacrifices are rewarded and acknowledged. The greatest motivation that drives me to continue is the desire to be the captain in the future.
9. Finally, what advice would you give to those considering a career as a cruise ship officer, especially women who may feel uncertain about this career path?
My advice for all the women, if you truly desire to pursue this career never give up, know that you will find many people ready to welcome you, teach you, and support you. Give yourself the opportunity to embark on a career that will completely change your view of the world and let you live an unconventional life! Working on a ship is not just a job, it is a lifestyle.
