There are many innovations that make the A-ROSA SENA so unique. Launched in June 2022 as the thirteenth vessel in the fleet, what sets her apart from all other European vessels on the river is her hybrid propulsion concept. In this case, hybrid means that the vessel combines state-of-the-art diesel generators with electric generators and battery storage. This combination allows for a process called peak shaving. The generated energy that is not needed can be stored in the battery. This means that the engines work efficiently in the long term. Furthermore, with the help of the battery, the E-Motion Ship can temporarily run only on electricity. This option is used by the nautical crew when entering and exiting ports. And it does it almost silently and without local emissions.
The fleet runs on Marine Gas Oil, MGO for short. MGO contains no heavy petroleum and has a very low sulfur content. To ensure the lowest possible fuel consumption right from the start, the ship's hulls are designed in such a way as to minimize the friction generated in the water.
Another innovation is the use of waste heat. When energy is consumed, waste heat is created as a byproduct. In order to use it sensibly and not simply give it away, a generator on board the A-ROSA SENA generates electricity from waste heat. The electrical energy thus obtained is stored in the battery and can support the on-board network if necessary. Waste heat can also be used to heat water needed for hotel operations. Speaking of water: the E-Motion ship's wastewater treatment plant is state-of-the-art. This is a membrane system that uses a complex process to clean the wastewater resulting from pollutants. The residue, the sewage sludge, is disposed of by specialized companies.
Innovation with recognition, this is A-ROSA SENA.
