Carnival Firenze christened

Carnival Cruise Line consolidated its position as the leading cruise line in California when it christened its new ship Carnival Firenze on 24 April at its new home, the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, according to a press release.

Hollywood actor Jonathan Bennett was the ship's godfather, and he and Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy celebrated all things Italian.

The 5,000-guest Carnival Fun Italian Style will sail year-round from the Port of Long Beach, adding significant capacity and joining two Carnival ships that currently sail year-round: the 5,100-passenger Carnival Panorama and the nearly 4,000-passenger Carnival Radiance. Launched just before the busy summer season and amidst the continued growth in the popularity of cruise holidays, Carnival Florence is part of a significant expansion that has added five ships to Carnival's fleet in the past 18 months.

"We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship gives us the opportunity to offer more entertainment to more people sailing from Long Beach," Duffy said. "The recipe that combines this ship's beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team's hospitality is, in a word, perfect!"

Like its sister Carnival Venezia, the ship introduces new concepts and experiences that bring a touch of Italian style to Carnival's guest products. Carnival Firenze, however, is the first ship in the fleet to introduce new technologies and harnesses artificial intelligence that creates guides for optimal, energy-saving routes on every sailing. The ship's captain and officers will be the first to use this significant upgrade to Carnival's travel efficiency system, ahead of a fleet-wide rollout that the cruise line expects to begin later this year.
